Media personality Rufai Oseni has shared an old video of Nyesom Wike, in which the former Rivers State governor affirmed that he has no power to choose a successor after leaving office.
In the clip, Wike who is currently FCT’s minister is heard saying, “The day I leave as Governor of Rivers State, in the name of Almighty God, I have no power to choose a successor because the people have the right to decide who leads them.”
Speaking to journalists at the time, Wike argued that the idea of a departing governor handpicking a successor or playing godfather politics “can only happen in Lagos and not Rivers State.” According to him, such a political culture would be difficult to replicate in Rivers State, unlike Lagos State.
He added that leadership is temporary, noting, “As governor, I will come and I will go.” Wike also referenced Peter Odili, saying Odili served as governor and exited office without attempting to impose a successor.
The resurfaced video has reignited online debate about political godfatherism and succession politics, especially in light of current political developments surrounding Wike and Rivers State.
