Residents across the Tema Metropolis and several communities in Accra are bracing for days of disrupted water supply after a major burst on a key transmission pipeline, Ghana Water Limited has confirmed.
The damage involves a 42-inch transmission line that carries treated water to the eastern corridor of Accra.
As a result, homes and businesses in Tema, Ashaiman, Gbetsele, Akatamanso, Klagon, Lashibi, Baatsonaa, Spintex, parts of East Legon, Nungua, Teshie and nearby areas are experiencing interruptions.
In a statement issued on Monday, January 19, 2026, the utility provider explained that the burst occurred on a critical section of the network, making it necessary to temporarily halt distribution to large areas in order to prevent further damage and allow for safe repairs.
For many residents, the disruption has brought daily routines to a standstill, with families adjusting cooking, cleaning and bathing schedules while businesses that depend heavily on water search for alternatives to stay open.
Ghana Water Limited says engineers and technical teams were deployed immediately after the fault was detected and have been working around the clock to fix the damaged section.
According to the company, the scale of the pipeline and the technical nature of the work mean repairs must be handled with care to avoid future failures.
“Due to the size of the transmission main and the complexity of the repair, the restoration process requires careful handling to ensure safety, durability and efficiency,” the statement said.
The company has urged essential service providers such as hospitals and schools to get in touch for temporary support during the interruption.
GWL has assured customers that the water supply will return as soon as repair works are completed, adding that updates will be shared as progress continues.
