A Magistrate Court sitting in Sagamu, Ogun State, has adjourned the trial of Adeniyi Kayode, the driver linked to the fatal road accident involving a Lexus SUV that resulted in the deaths of two people and left boxing star Anthony Joshua injured. The case has been rescheduled for March 17, 2026.

Kayode, who is standing trial on charges related to reckless driving, appeared before the court on Wednesday. During the session, counsel for the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP), R.D. Kadiri, asked for additional time to enable the prosecution gather more evidence and arrange for witnesses to be properly lined up.

Kadiri told the court that the police had already forwarded the case file to the Ogun State DPP and that more time was required to thoroughly study the documents, verify details, and prepare a solid case for trial. He stressed that rushing the process could compromise the quality of prosecution, hence the need for a brief adjournment. After considering the request, Magistrate Olufunilayo Somefun granted the application and fixed March 17, 2026, as the next hearing date.

This is not the first time the matter has been postponed. On January 20, counsel to the police, Richard Nigiwe, had also applied for an adjournment, explaining that the prosecution needed time to duplicate the case file and transmit it to the state’s Attorney-General through the DPP for proper legal advice. Although defence counsel, Olalekan Abiodun, objected to the application and argued that the trial should commence immediately since three prosecution witnesses were already present in court, the magistrate ruled in favour of the prosecution. The case was subsequently adjourned to February 25 to allow the necessary legal processes to be completed.

The case stems from a tragic road accident that occurred on December 29, 2025, near the Sinoma area of Sagamu. The Lexus SUV conveying Anthony Joshua and members of his entourage reportedly collided with a stationary truck while travelling from Lagos, leading to a devastating crash.

While the former world heavyweight boxing champion escaped with minor injuries, two members of his team — Kevin Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami — lost their lives. Ghami was said to be Joshua’s long-time friend and strength and conditioning coach, while Ayodele served as his personal trainer. Their deaths sent shockwaves through the sports and entertainment communities, prompting an outpouring of tributes from fans and colleagues around the world.

Following the accident, Joshua was rushed to Lagoon Hospital in Ikoyi, Lagos, where he received medical attention. He was discharged on December 31, 2025, after doctors confirmed that his condition was stable and that he had sustained no life-threatening injuries.

As legal proceedings continue, the adjournment is expected to give the prosecution ample time to compile all necessary evidence, interview key witnesses, and build a comprehensive case. Observers say the outcome of the trial will be closely watched, given the high-profile nature of those involved and the tragic loss of lives.

The next court sitting on March 17, 2026, is anticipated to mark a significant step forward in the case, as both the prosecution and defence prepare to present their arguments before the court.
