Aden Holloway, a standout guard for the Alabama Crimson Tide men’s basketball, has been arrested and charged with felony marijuana possession just days before the start of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament.
According to the Tuscaloosa Police Department, agents with the West Alabama Narcotics Task Force executed a search at a residence in Tuscaloosa on Monday, March 16. Authorities said the search led to the recovery of more than one pound of marijuana, along with drug paraphernalia and cash.
Following the search, the 21-year-old junior was arrested and charged with first-degree possession of marijuana and failure to affix a tax stamp, both of which are felony offences under Alabama law. Holloway was later taken to county jail where his bond was set at $5,000.
The arrest comes during a crucial period for Alabama’s basketball program. Holloway has been one of the team’s key players this season, averaging 16.8 points per game. He most recently scored 18 points in Alabama’s loss to Ole Miss Rebels men’s basketball on Friday.
The Crimson Tide secured a No. 4 seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament and are scheduled to face Hofstra Pride men’s basketball, the No. 13 seed, in their opening-round matchup on Friday. It remains unclear how the arrest will affect Holloway’s availability for the tournament game, though his participation appears unlikely unless there is a change in his legal status.
