Nigerian musicians recorded a significant rise in earnings from the global streaming platform Spotify in 2025, generating more than N60 billion in revenue, according to the company’s latest annual report.
The report, released on Monday, highlighted the rapid expansion of Nigeria’s music industry on the platform, revealing that the earnings of Nigerian artists have increased by 140 percent within the last two years.
This surge reflects the growing international demand for Nigerian music and the expanding presence of local artists on digital streaming platforms.
According to the report, independent artists and labels played a major role in the revenue growth. They accounted for approximately 58 percent of all royalties earned by Nigerian musicians on the platform during the year.
This figure demonstrates how independent creators are increasingly benefiting from the global streaming economy, with many artists choosing to release music outside traditional record label structures.
Spotify’s data also revealed the massive engagement Nigerian music received from listeners around the world in 2025.
Artists from the country collectively generated more than 30.3 billion streams on the platform over the course of the year. These streams translated into approximately 1.6 billion hours of listening time, indicating strong and sustained global interest in Nigerian songs.
Female Nigerian artists also experienced notable progress during the year. According to the report, streams from women in the Nigerian music scene grew by 55 percent in 2025, reflecting rising recognition and popularity for female performers in the industry.
The report further emphasised the global reach of Nigerian music, highlighting how widely the country’s artists are being discovered through playlists on the platform.
Nigerian musicians were featured in nearly 320 million playlists worldwide, a development that helped expose their music to millions of listeners across different regions.
Within Nigeria itself, Spotify users created more than 12 million playlists that included songs from local artists, showing strong domestic support for the industry.
Overall, more than 60 million playlists featuring Nigerian artists were created on the platform during the year.
The streaming giant noted that the numbers highlight the continued global influence of Nigerian music, particularly as Afrobeats and other local genres continue to gain traction across international markets.
Over the past decade, Nigerian artists have increasingly built global audiences through digital platforms, collaborations with international acts, and social media promotion.
Streaming services like Spotify have played a key role in this growth by making Nigerian music easily accessible to listeners around the world.
Industry observers say the rapid rise in streaming revenue demonstrates the increasing commercial value of Nigerian music, as well as the importance of digital distribution in helping artists reach wider audiences.
With the industry continuing to expand globally, many analysts believe Nigerian artists will see even greater streaming numbers and revenue growth in the coming years.
