A new US intelligence assessment says China does not currently plan to invade Taiwan in 2027, despite ongoing tensions between both sides.
According to the report, Chinese leaders are instead focused on gaining control of Taiwan without the use of force and have no fixed timeline for achieving unification.
China, which considers Taiwan part of its territory, has continued to increase military pressure around the island in recent years, raising global concerns about a possible conflict.
The US intelligence community stated that Beijing is likely to keep working toward conditions that would allow eventual unification without war.
However, the report also noted that a full-scale invasion of Taiwan would be extremely difficult and risky, particularly if the United States intervenes.
Reacting to the report, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian insisted that the Taiwan issue remains an internal matter for China, urging the US to be cautious in its statements and actions.
He also called on Washington to stop what he described as exaggerating the “China threat” narrative.
Previously, US defence officials had suggested 2027 as a possible timeline for a Chinese invasion, but the latest intelligence presents a more cautious outlook.
The report added that China views unification with Taiwan as part of its long-term goal of “national rejuvenation” by 2049, indicating a broader and less immediate timeline.
While the US does not officially recognise Taiwan as a country, it remains the island’s primary military supporter, maintaining a complex and sensitive relationship with both sides.
