The Edo State Police Command has taken into custody several students connected to the bullying incident at Igbinedion Education Centre, an episode that recently sparked widespread outrage on social media.
The case gained public attention after a disturbing video surfaced online about a week ago, showing two male students assaulting a fellow student who appeared helpless on the ground. In the clip, one of the attackers was seen gripping the victim’s school uniform while repeatedly stepping on his chest as the boy cried out in pain.
The footage quickly went viral, drawing condemnation from the public and prompting swift action from school authorities, who expelled those involved. The Edo State Government also intervened, directing security agencies to ensure those responsible were arrested and prosecuted, while reiterating its zero-tolerance stance on bullying.
Providing an update on the situation, police spokesperson Eno Ikoedem confirmed on Saturday that investigations had led to the identification and arrest of all individuals directly linked to the incident. She added that the suspects would face legal proceedings at a family court, in line with laws governing minors and juvenile justice.
“Following a thorough and painstaking investigation, the command confirms that all individuals directly connected to the incident have been identified, while those implicated have been apprehended and are being charged to the family court in accordance with extant laws guiding juvenile justice and child protection,” the statement read.
Ikoedem further disclosed that the Commissioner of Police has ordered an усиление—strengthening—of the Operation Safe Schools initiative across secondary schools in the state. The move is aimed at improving monitoring systems and preventing similar incidents in the future.
In addition, the police announced plans to intensify awareness campaigns through its Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices. The initiative will focus on engaging students, teachers, and school administrators through sensitisation and reorientation programmes designed to address harmful behaviours.
“Additionally, the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices has been mobilised to engage students and school administrators through advocacy, sensitisation, and reorientation programmes,” the PPRO said.
While appealing for calm, the police assured the public that concrete steps are being taken to ensure justice is served and that measures are being implemented to prevent a recurrence.
“While appealing to members of the public to remain calm, the command assures that proactive steps were being taken to ensure that justice is not only served but that measures are also emplaced to prevent a recurrence,” the statement added.
The Edo State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order, stressing that the safety and protection of residents—especially children—remain a top priority.
