Arise TV anchors, Reuben Abati and Rufai Oseni, have berated President Tinubu for meeting with the bereaved family members in last Sunday’s attack in Jos at the Plateau state airport.
President Tinubu on Thursday evening, March 2, paid a condolence visit to the government and people of the state following the attack in Angwaum that led to the de@th of over 30 persons. While addressing the state government and members of the bereaved families at the airport, President Tinubu said he had only ten minutes to leave the state as the airport lights for the runway weren’t working.
‘’You have no light at the airport and I have to fly back within the next ten minutes” he told the gathering
While analysing the visit on TV this morning, Rufai described the President’s actions as ‘’insensitive”. He opined that the President should have gone inside Jos, specifically at the location where the tragedy happened and paid his condolence visit to the bereaved families.
‘’So the President went to Jos but didn’t go inside Jos. He was in the airport. I mean what level of insensitivity to the plight of the people do we have in this country? He had the event at the airport and he was telling them ‘I have time because the airport will soon shut the lights so I have to go’’ Why didn’t go into Jos town? why didn’t he go to where the incident happened? Just like he did with Yelwata. We thought its a one-off point but its a pattern. For those that keep defending these things, I don’t know when they are ever going to be sensible. You say you are there to commisserate with people, you have an event within the airport, you didn’t get into the town….You are the number 1 citizen. You have all the security might in this country.”
In his own submission, Abati argued that if the President of Nigeria feels ‘’intimidated’ by the insecurity in Plateau state, what should residents of the state then do.
‘’He was poorly advised because what happens is when the Presidnet is visiting any part of the country, there will have been security briefings. His security people weather the guards or the Ministry fo defence did not understand empathy. What we know is that when a President is going to empathize with people who have faced any form of disaster o tragedy, he goes to the place where the tragedy took place so he can be seen to be identifying with the people.”
Abati added that it was very embarrassing for the President to say that he had to leave early because there was no power on the roadway at the airport.
