Former Director General of the National Orientation Agency, Idi Farouk, has raised fresh concerns over the activities of terrorist groups in Nigeria, alleging possible links between attacks on communities and illegal resource exploitation.
Farouk made the remarks during an interview on Trust TV, where he discussed the operations of Boko Haram and other armed groups across the country. His comments come amid ongoing insecurity in parts of northern Nigeria, where communities continue to face violent attacks and displacement.
Referencing information he encountered, Farouk said, “According to the post I saw, when a village is sacked. A day after, bulldozer will come and mine lithium and take away to other countries.” The statement suggests a possible economic motive behind some of the attacks, though he did not provide verified evidence to support the claim.
The former NOA boss noted that such reports, even when unverified, contribute to growing public suspicion about the drivers of insecurity in affected regions. He stressed the importance of thoroughly investigating these allegations to determine whether there is any link between terrorist activities and illegal mining operations.
