An 89-year-old gunman is at large following a series of shootings at a social security office and a courthouse in central Athens, Greece on Tuesday. Several people have been wounded in the attacks, prompting a major police operation to locate the suspect.
Authorities report that the man, armed with a shotgun hidden under a trenchcoat, first targeted the National Social Security Fund (EFKA) offices in the Kerameikos district. Alexandros Varveris, head of the fund, stated that the gunman reached the fourth floor, instructed one employee to “duck,” and then shot another staff member in the leg.
Police applied a tourniquet to the victim at the scene before he was transported to a hospital.
The gunman is then suspected of moving to an Athens court building, where he opened fire on the ground floor. Footage from state broadcaster ERT News showed ambulance crews evacuating at least three additional people from the courthouse.
While a clear motive has not been established, witnesses reported that the man threw envelopes containing documents onto the courthouse floor during the attack, claiming they explained his actions.
Greek police remain on high alert as they search for the suspect. Gun violence is notably rare in Greece, where firearm laws are strictly regulated.
