US President Donald Trump has instructed US national security officials to prepare for a long-term blockade of Iran’s ports to compel Tehran to dismantle its nuclear program, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.
The report suggests that Trump does not believe Iran is negotiating in good faith. He is reportedly pushing for a deal that would force Tehran to suspend uranium enrichment for 20 years and accept stringent restrictions beyond that period.
“They better get smart soon!” Trump declared in a post on his social media platform.
Citing unnamed officials, the Journal stated that Trump reached this decision during a Monday meeting in the White House Situation Room. He reportedly concluded that either resuming bombing campaigns or walking away from the conflict entirely presented too much risk.
Instead, he directed the US Navy to continue squeezing Iran’s vital oil exports until the government agrees to all of Washington’s demands.
