Man k!lls wife in front of her relatives for trying to divorce him

A family mediation aimed at resolving a troubled marriage turned deadly in Beitbridge, Zimbabwe, after a man allegedly attacked and killed his wife during a meeting with relatives.

Police said the incident involved Mukhosi Shadreck Mulaudzi Muthavhatsindi, a 56-year-old from Malala village, and his wife, who had both recently returned from South Africa amid ongoing marital disputes.

According to authorities, efforts to reconcile the couple led to a family gathering at Matshiloni village on April 26, where relatives suggested divorce as a possible resolution. Chief Superintendent Mesuli Ncube said tensions escalated during the discussions.

“Preliminary investigations reveal that the couple was staying together in South Africa and they returned to Zimbabwe on April 24. Upon arrival, the suspect went to his home in Malala while the now deceased went to her maiden home in Matshiloni due to a long-standing domestic dispute,” he said.

He added: “During deliberations, the wife’s relatives suggested that the couple should settle for a divorce since they had failed to reach an amicable agreement over a longer period. This did not go down well with the suspect and an argument ensued.”

Police said the situation quickly turned violent, with the suspect allegedly chasing his wife as she tried to escape.

“The suspect stood up and charged towards his wife, who ran away and hid behind one of the houses at the homestead. He later caught up with her and stabbed her once on the left side of the chest.” The woman reportedly screamed before collapsing and was pronounced dead at the scene.

After the incident, the suspect attempted to flee but was apprehended by members of the community. “The suspect bolted from the scene but was pursued by a mob who managed to apprehend him, and the matter was subsequently reported to the police,” Ncube said.

Police confirmed the suspect is now in custody and awaiting a court appearance, while the victim’s body has been taken for a post-mortem examination. The case remains under investigation.
