The sister of Mene Ogidi, a 28-year-old man allegedly shot dead by a police officer in Effurun, Delta State, has shared a detailed account of the events leading up to his death, as public outrage continues to grow over the incident.
According to her, the tragedy occurred on a Sunday, April 26, after her brother informed the family he was stepping out to collect a waybill on behalf of a friend in Sapele.
“The day the thing happen, na Sunday. When he wan comot from house, he tell me say he wan go collect waybill. He say one of him friends for Sapele ask am make he help am pick am,” she said. She explained that before leaving, Mene had complained about issues with his phone and requested to use their mother’s device instead.
“He come talk say him phone get issue, so make my mama give am her phone make he use am. My mama give am the phone, he come put card. After that, he call the friend with my mama phone, and the person send am money for transport to go the place.”
The family later became alarmed when they could no longer reach him. “Hin kor take leave house. After some time, we no hear from am again. I begin call the number wey he use call the friend, but nobody pick.”
She said the situation escalated when they received reports that a man had been shot by police officers in the area. The family rushed to the scene, only to discover the victim was Mene. “Later, people come tell us say police shoot person for that area. We rush go there. When we reach, we see say na my brother. He don already… them don kill am.”
The sister also rejected claims that her brother was armed, insisting he had no connection to any weapon. “Them say dem find gun inside the car wey he enter, but my brother no get any gun. Na just to go collect waybill he dey go.”
She further alleged that police officers restricted access to the body and removed it from the scene without allowing the family proper contact. “The police no even allow us go near the body well. Them just carry am go like that.”
She added that it was only because of a video circulating online that the family was able to understand what had happened. “If to say nobody video am, we for no even know wetin really happen. We for still dey find am till today.”
