In Matuu town, Machakos County, a family has been plunged into grief following the tragic loss of a young man during the Gen Z-led anti-government protests held on Wednesday.
Victoria Mutheu, the mother of the deceased, painfully recalled how her life changed after receiving a distressing phone call. Around mid-morning, an unidentified caller reached out, urging her to rush to Matuu Mission Hospital where her 21-year-old son, William Musyimi Mutevu, had reportedly been taken for treatment.
Sensing something was terribly wrong, Victoria made her way to the hospital. Upon arrival, she was taken directly to a room where her son’s body had been laid. Her worst fears were confirmed as William had succumbed to injuries believed to have been caused by police gunfire. Medical staff told her the young man had sustained three gunshot wounds to the stomach, and visible signs of excessive bleeding could still be seen where he lay.
William was among scores of youth who had gathered in Matuu town to participate in what was intended to be a peaceful demonstration in remembrance of those who lost their lives during the previous year’s anti-Finance Bill protests. However, the situation turned chaotic after security officers reportedly opened fire during the confrontation with demonstrators.
The young man’s untimely death has left his family, friends, and the local community devastated.
