Kulthum Akbari, a 56-year-old serial wife, admitted to killing 11 elderly spouses over 22 years. She targeted older men and married them before committing horrible crimes and hiding her traces.
The majority of her victims looked to have died from natural causes, allowing her to continue for two decades without arousing suspicion.
The startling case has earned her the terrible nickname “Black Widow” in Iran and aroused widespread indignation.
According to court documents, Akbari’s alleged killing spree began in 2000 and lasted until 2023, Gulf News says.
Investigators said she targeted older men, married them, and gradually poisoned them with a combination of diabetes drugs, stimulants, and, in some cases, industrial alcohol.
“The defendant was skilled at covering her tracks,” prosecutors said the court. “Most of the victims appeared to have died of natural causes due to their age and chronic illnesses, allowing her to continue for decades without raising suspicion.”
Her final accused victim, Azizollah Babaei from 2023, died in what appeared to be natural circumstances. However, concerns expressed by Babaei’s son prompted a police inquiry, which finally led to Akbari’s detention.
During court hearings, prosecutors showed that Akbari painstakingly monitored her victims’ health, waiting for the ideal moment to attack in order to evade detection.
She has also been charged with one count of attempted murder for an alleged unsuccessful poisoning. The litigation has attracted over 45 plaintiffs, including the families of numerous fatalities.
Relatives of the four men killed have openly demanded that Akbari face the death penalty. Akbari is currently facing eleven allegations of planned murder and one of attempted murder.
A verdict is expected after the remaining hearings in a trial that has piqued the interest of both Iranian and international media.
