Wike: “It Would Be Stupid Of Me To Say Tinubu Has Done Nothing Just Because I Am Opposition”

Nyesom Wike has rejected the idea that opposition politicians must automatically criticize every action taken by the government, insisting that responsible opposition should focus on constructive engagement rather than constant condemnation.

Speaking during a recent interview, the former Rivers State governor stated that political maturity requires acknowledging good governance and effective policies whenever they occur, regardless of party affiliation. According to him, opposition politics should not be reduced to rejecting every government decision simply for political reasons.

In a video shared on the official YouTube channel of TVC News, Wike responded to allegations that the ruling party is attempting to weaken opposition platforms across the country. While addressing the issue, he said, “It would be stupid of me to say the government has done nothing just because I am opposition.”

The minister described such an approach as unreasonable and harmful to national development. He argued that genuine opposition should involve presenting alternative ideas and holding leaders accountable without ignoring policies that positively impact citizens.

Wike pointed to the removal of fuel subsidy as an example of a difficult but necessary reform that previous administrations failed to implement. According to him, many Nigerians had long acknowledged that the subsidy system was unsustainable and riddled with corruption, but past governments lacked the courage to end it.

He explained that the current administration’s decision to remove the subsidy has increased revenue allocations to states, allowing governors to execute more grassroots development projects and improve infrastructure within their regions.

The minister also clarified that supporting certain government policies does not mean he has abandoned his political identity or membership in the Peoples Democratic Party. He maintained that opposition should not be defined by endless hostility or the refusal to acknowledge progress.

Wike further urged Nigerians to move away from what he described as politics driven by bitterness and personal interests. According to him, political engagement should focus on facts, performance, and the overall welfare of citizens rather than emotional divisions and unnecessary conflicts.

He concluded by reaffirming his commitment to defending his political beliefs and prioritizing peace and national development above political pressure or intimidation.
