A chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party and convener of The Alternative, Segun Sowunmi, has continued his criticism of former presidential candidate Peter Obi, expressing disappointment over what he described as Obi’s current political direction. Sowunmi made the remarks during an interview on the Selah Medidate Podcast on Saturday, February 28, 2026.
Addressing perceptions about his stance, Sowunmi rejected claims that his comments were motivated by personal dislike. “People think I don’t like Peter. I don’t hate Peter. I’m just so disappointed and angry with him because he’s making us start from the beginning again,” he said. He added that Obi’s recent actions were undermining political momentum previously built. “And all the energy he was able to gather, he’s allowing it to slip away.”
Sowunmi questioned the strategic basis of Obi’s political choices. “Why? because what he knows will not work is what he’s trying to delude himself that will work,” he said. He then compared Obi’s expectations to the political histories of other prominent figures. “Does Atiku look like kind of leader that used to step down? Has Atiku ever congratulated anybody that won election before in this country?” he asked. He also referenced former minister Rotimi Amaechi, saying, “Or Rotimi Amaechi looks like that persom that will step down.”
Continuing, Sowunmi questioned assumptions about political concessions during party contests. “You are naive when you see somebody that is going to conceive. Won’t you see it in the action?” he said. He went on to describe Amaechi’s political stature in detail. “We you see Rotimi Amechi the Agama lizard of where is that place of Ikwerre with his stomach looking like that of a bird, looks like someone is going to concede,” he said.
Sowunmi further highlighted Amaechi’s political experience and resources. “Do you know how much money he has?” he asked, before listing positions previously held by Amaechi: “Rotimi was governor 8 years. Rotimi as a speaker 8 years. Rotimi was minister eight years. Rotimi was DG governor’s forum.”
He also referenced Amaechi’s performance in party primaries. “That kind of fellow who came second in an APC primary where Bola came first and your vice president came a distant third,” he said, referring to former elections involving Bola Tinubu. He concluded this line of argument by questioning expectations placed on Obi: “That is the kind of person that’s going to step down for Peter. I don’t know is Peter better than him.”
