Chelsea reach total agreement to appoint Xabi Alonso as Manager

Chelsea Football Club has reportedly reached a total agreement to appoint Xabi Alonso as the club’s new manager.

According to reports from The Athletic, Alonso has accepted the opportunity to take charge at Stamford Bridge after visiting London earlier this month, following the departure of Liam Rosenoir. A four-year contract is currently being finalized, with an official announcement from the club expected soon.

The decision comes after a thorough search by the Chelsea hierarchy, during which former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola was also seriously considered for the role before the club advanced negotiations with Alonso.

The 44-year-old Spanish tactician has been available since leaving Real Madrid in January, less than a year into a three-year contract at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Prior to his brief stint in Spain, Alonso achieved historic success in Germany, guiding Bayer 04 Leverkusen to their first-ever Bundesliga title during the 2023/24 season while finishing the domestic campaign entirely unbeaten.

His appointment marks a return to the English game, where he previously spent five years as a player for Liverpool, famously winning the UEFA Champions League in 2005.

The managerial change follows a turbulent period for Chelsea, who parted ways with Rosenoir in April after a disappointing run of form that included five consecutive Premier League defeats. With the team currently under interim management, Alonso will be tasked with overseeing a major rebuild and restoring the club’s status among Europe’s elite.
