Nollywood actress Shine Rosman has raised concerns over casting practices in the Nigerian film industry, claiming that many filmmakers now prioritise physical appearance over acting talent when selecting performers for roles.
Speaking during a recent episode of the Baaj and Paul podcast, the actress said the growing focus on beauty in Nollywood is affecting the quality of storytelling and pushing genuine talent to the sidelines.
According to her, the trend is becoming more visible in modern productions where appearance is often treated as more important than performance.
Rosman argued that while there are still a few directors who focus strictly on talent, the majority of industry decision-makers tend to favour looks over skill. She said this shift has contributed to a situation where many actresses feel pressured to alter their appearance in order to remain relevant in the industry.
She further alleged that the emphasis on physical beauty has led to an increase in cosmetic procedures among actresses, as some feel they need to enhance their bodies to secure roles. According to her, this growing pressure has created an unhealthy standard within the industry.
The actress also expressed concern that beauty standards in Nollywood have become so influential that opportunities are sometimes denied to individuals who do not conform, including those who choose not to wear heavy makeup or undergo body enhancement procedures.
Rosman claimed that some individuals who may not be the most qualified for certain roles are still getting opportunities simply because of their physical appeal.
She described this as a worrying development that could affect the long-term growth and credibility of the Nigerian movie industry.
She urged filmmakers, producers and other key stakeholders in Nollywood to return to a system that prioritises talent, creativity and professionalism over appearance.
According to her, the industry risks losing its originality and depth if casting decisions continue to be influenced mainly by looks.
Rosman emphasised that Nollywood has a large pool of gifted actors and actresses who deserve recognition based on their abilities rather than their physical features.
She called for a shift in mindset that would allow skilled performers to thrive regardless of how they look.
