




Public school teachers in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, withdrew their services and suspended all academic activities on Monday morning [1]. The industrial action follows the recent abduction of several educators and pupils, and the subsequent killing of a teacher by suspected terrorists.
The protesting teachers marched through the streets displaying placards with various inscriptions. They urged all tiers of government to intensify security operations and secure the immediate release of the remaining captives.
The demonstration was triggered by the recent mass abduction in the Oriire Local Government Area, an incident that continues to spark widespread outrage and anxiety among education stakeholders and residents across Oyo State [1].
Addressing the situation after a high-level security meeting on Sunday, May 17, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde confirmed the execution of one of the abducted teachers. Governor Makinde expressed his condolences and pledged that the state government is deploying all necessary resources to rescue the surviving victims safely.
According to the governor, the bandits initially seized seven teachers alongside a yet-to-be-ascertained number of school pupils.
He said that seven teachers and an a yet to be ascertained number of pupils were abducted by the terrorists who attacked the school last Friday.
Confirming the development, the governor said one of the abducted teachers, believed to be a Mathematics teacher, was k!lled by the terrorists.
“What we know right now is that seven teachers were abducted. Unfortunately, we received a video this morning indicating that one of the teachers, understood to be the Mathematics teacher, was killed by the terrorists. Our prayers are with the family,” Makinde said
