Nigerians on social media are currently reacting to a statement released by the Nigerian Union of Teachers NUT, Oyo state chapter, calling for fasting and prayers for the safe return of abducted students and teachers.
Last Friday, terrorists stormed Orire local government area in the state and abducted a number of students and teachers. One of the teachers has been beheaded by the terrorists. A video of his decapitated body surfaced online some days ago.
In a statement released, the Teacher’s union called for a three-day fasting and prayer.
‘’While the government is currently exploring all possible measures through various security formations to ensure the safety and rescue of the captives, we humbly appeal to all our teeming members and generality of teachers, and well wishers across the state to commit ourselves into a 3 day fasting and pr@yers rooted in their respective religious faiths for the safe, speedy and unconditional release of our dear colleagues held in captivity. Kindly ensure a joint prayer session by 12:00 noon on each of the 3 days across our schools.”

Nigerians found the call for prayers ridiculous. They argued that the teachers are supposed to be going on strike demanding the government rescue their abducted colleagues and pupils instead of calling for prayers. Some, however argued that prayer is important as well as strikes.
