Nigeria’s slow pace in appointing ambassadors to key foreign missions has drawn fresh criticism from political analyst Majeed Dahiru, who says the delay risks weakening the country’s influence and international partnerships. His comments, made during an interview on Channels Television, come as stakeholders continue to question the government’s diplomatic readiness.
Dahiru stressed that ambassadors play a crucial role in shaping Nigeria’s economic, political, and security relationships around the world. According to him, every new administration should prioritise filling these strategic positions within the first few months of assuming office, as prolonged vacancies create gaps in representation and decision-making.
He described the current delay as a “serious lapse,” warning that it could hinder Nigeria’s ability to negotiate effectively, attract investment, and maintain strong alliances. He added that diplomatic posts are too important to be left unattended, especially at a time when global competition for economic and security partnerships is growing.
The analyst also urged Nigerians and policymakers not to mix up unrelated international matters, particularly sensitive issues such as religious persecution, noting that misinterpretations could lead to avoidable diplomatic strain. He said Nigeria’s political and cultural complexities require careful handling to avoid misunderstandings with global partners.
Dahiru concluded that Nigeria must act quickly and strategically to maintain the respect and influence it deserves internationally. Additional context and extended analysis on this topic are available on Newshost Buzz.
