After 20 Years in Prison, I Returned to Find My Parents Dead, My Wife Remarried, and My Land Gone

A Mombasa resident identified as Salim has shared an emotional account of how he spent two decades in prison for a robbery he insists he did not commit. His experience highlights the heavy impact wrongful accusations can have on a person’s life and future.

Salim said he was unable to proceed to secondary school after completing primary education, prompting him to look for work at a tourist-related business in Mombasa. According to him, staff at the company later reported that KSh 30,000 had gone missing, leading to rising tension among workers. Some colleagues who reportedly had personal disagreements with him accused him of involvement, with one claiming to have seen him and another alleging he recognised his voice.

He was arrested and charged with robbery with violence, eventually being sentenced to life imprisonment. While serving his sentence, Salim returned to school, completed his secondary education, and later filed an appeal. After 20 years, a judge ruled that the case lacked evidence of violence or property damage, declaring the time he had already served sufficient for release.

However, freedom came with painful losses. Salim discovered that both his parents had died, his wife had remarried, and his land had been sold by a relative who also passed away. He currently lives with a sibling and says rebuilding his life has been extremely difficult. He is appealing to well-wishers and potential employers for any job opportunity that can help him start again.
