Akwa Ibom, Nigeria – In a political twist shaking the South-South region, Senate President Godswill Akpabio has revealed that two serving governors from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are preparing to cross over to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the coming days.
Akpabio made the explosive revelation during a rally held at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium on Saturday, June 21, while celebrating the defection of Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom from the PDP to the APC.
He declared:
“After Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno, the Governor of Rivers will join the APC; then, after him, the Governor of Bayelsa State will also join.”

Mass Exodus From PDP?
The news follows recent defections by other powerful PDP figures, including Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, who moved to the APC just weeks earlier. His exit included the collapse of major PDP structures in Delta State — with even former governor and ex-vice presidential candidate Ifeanyi Okowa reportedly backing the switch.
With Akwa Ibom and Delta States now in APC hands, the Senate President is making good on his promise to turn the entire South-South zone into a stronghold for the ruling party.
Cabinet Fallout After Eno’s Defection
Governor Umo Eno’s defection wasn’t without internal resistance. Within days of his announcement, two of his top cabinet members resigned, refusing to follow him to the APC.
-
Chris Abasi Eyo, special adviser on media, cited Eno’s directive that any cabinet member unwilling to decamp must step down.
-
Ini Ememobong, commissioner for information, also resigned for the same reason.
These exits have fueled speculation that internal party unity is breaking down, especially as more PDP governors face pressure to align with the APC.
The Roots of the PDP Crisis
The opposition party’s internal crisis traces back to the 2022 presidential primaries, when the northern leadership bloc refused to rotate power to the South. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s emergence as PDP flagbearer without southern consensus sparked rebellion among five southern governors — led by Nyesom Wike — who later worked against the party in the 2023 polls.
Atiku eventually lost the election to Bola Ahmed Tinubu, widening the party’s leadership cracks and pushing more members toward defection.
With political loyalties shifting rapidly, the battle for 2027 is heating up — and it seems the APC is tightening its grip on Nigeria’s oil-rich South-South region.
