The 2025 edition of the Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) turned out to be a triumphant night for Nigerian filmmakers and talents, as several homegrown productions and industry heavyweights took center stage at the glamorous ceremony. Held on Sunday, November 9, 2025, at the Balmoral Convention Centre in Ikeja GRA, Lagos, the 21st AMAA celebration once again underscored Nigeria’s growing influence in African cinema.
The evening was filled with colour, energy, and creative expression, beginning with an electrifying opening performance by the Ebony Band. The atmosphere inside the venue was charged with excitement as filmmakers, actors, producers, and enthusiasts gathered to honour the finest in African film. Lasting nearly five hours, the ceremony maintained its lively spirit from start to finish, culminating in jubilant celebrations for winners and nominees.
Among the standout achievements of the night were Lateef Adedimeji’s celebrated role and the wide acclaim for Lisabi: The Uprising, one of the most talked-about Nigerian films of the year. Veteran actress Tina Mba also received high praise, while Burna Boy’s co-produced film, 3 Cold Dishes, further cemented Nigeria’s reputation as a powerhouse in continental filmmaking. These projects, along with other notable Nigerian entries, made an undeniable impact at the awards.
In keeping with AMAA’s tradition of blending film with theatre, the night featured a brief but captivating stage drama. Legendary Nollywood icon Pete Edochie took on the role of “god,” while Tony Umez played a curious seeker, drawing applause from the audience and adding a cultural flourish to the event.
Shortly after the performance, AMAA’s Chief Executive Officer, Raymond Anyiam-Osigwe, delivered an opening speech that echoed throughout the hall with pride and acknowledgement of the industry’s growth. He applauded the determination and talent of African creatives, particularly those from Nigeria, whose influence continues to spread across global cinema spaces.
“We salute Nollywood, its stars, and all the creatives who have contributed to its phenomenal success. Your accomplishments have propelled African cinema to international recognition, and AMAA honors your industry, your talent, and your contributions,” he said.
Anyiam-Osigwe also highlighted the essence of continental unity, reminding attendees that success in African cinema thrives on cooperation rather than rivalry. He emphasized this point further by referencing a popular proverb, stating, “A tree does not make a forest. Nigeria is a vital and vibrant member of our continent, but her finest contribution comes when she complements the whole — when African nations rise together, through collaboration, not competition.”
Following the address, six impeccably dressed jury members stepped on stage to present the official list of the 26 winners across various categories. The selection reflected excellence from different corners of the continent, showcasing the diversity and evolution of African storytelling.
After the formal announcements, the Rizyn Band took over the stage, energizing the room with music and performances that had many guests singing along. Their set added a lively rhythm to the evening, rounding off the celebratory mood as the award recipients took photos, embraced colleagues, and shared emotional reflections on their achievements.
In total, 26 awards were presented to African film professionals including actors, cinematographers, producers, makeup artists, costumiers, lighting experts, and others who play critical roles behind the scenes. The winners’ list highlighted the depth of talent emerging across Africa, reinforcing AMAA’s mission to serve as a platform that recognizes and celebrates continental filmmaking excellence.
The 2025 AMAA ceremony not only rewarded outstanding artistic expression but also reaffirmed Nigeria’s undeniable role in shaping modern African cinema. With films like Lisabi: The Uprising, 3 Cold Dishes, and performances by veterans like Tina Mba making waves, the event made one thing clear: Nollywood continues to rise, innovate, and inspire — and its brightest stars are shining across the continent more powerfully than ever.
