Amaechi Accuses INEC of Sabotaging Opposition Ahead of 2027 Elections

Former Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, has raised serious allegations against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), claiming the commission is deliberately frustrating opposition efforts to challenge the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming 2027 general elections.

Amaechi made these claims on Thursday during an interview on Channels Television’s political programme, Politics Today.

“Every member of the opposition who belongs to the coalition is a member of the ADC,” Amaechi stated.
“Are we stopping at that? The answer is no. I head a committee with the mandate of the coalition to pursue the registration of the All Democratic Alliance, ADA.”

According to him, INEC’s refusal to register the All Democratic Alliance (ADA) forced the coalition to temporarily adopt the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a political platform. He accused INEC of deliberately shutting the political space in favour of the ruling APC.

“Now, if INEC had registered ADA, we would probably not have bothered about going to the ADC. The political space is closed for the benefit of the APC. I come to say that the INEC chairman is not ashamed,” he said.

Amaechi further alleged that INEC’s leadership is intentionally stalling the registration of new political parties by using administrative excuses.

“In fact, what is holding the ADA for now is that we have yet to bring the address of our offices and the officers of the party that will submit in the next meeting.”

He also revealed that several groups seeking registration as political parties had already complied but were ignored by INEC. According to him, many of these aspiring parties have had their office rents expire while waiting for a response.

“Some of them, their rents have expired. So, the chairman of INEC is deliberately doing that so that there will be nobody fighting the APC. And they’re not even ashamed that after (Maurice) Iwu, they organised the worst election; I would be ashamed.”

Despite these obstacles, Amaechi assured that the opposition coalition under the ADC banner would continue to mobilize the Nigerian electorate and ensure credible elections in 2027.

“The coalition will mobilise Nigerians to vote and stop people from rigging elections,” he concluded.
