In a recent YouTube live session, security analyst Dele Farotimi shed light on the alarming level of audacity among armed groups operating in Nigeria. He recounted how a notorious bandit leader, Jankare, allegedly orchestrated the killing of ACP Aminu Dahir, a police officer, and then wore the officer’s uniform during subsequent peace meetings with government officials.
Farotimi described the disturbing sequence of events, noting that after killing ACP Dahir, the bandits stripped him of his uniform, which Jankare later used to attend meetings intended to negotiate peace. The uniform reportedly still bore the officer’s name, highlighting the brazenness of the act.
He further revealed that the militants set strict conditions for the peace talks, insisting that no policeman should be visible at the meetings. If security officers were required to attend for official purposes, they were forbidden from wearing their uniforms. “The militants had told the Government, no policemen must be seen and if they must attend, they must not come in their uniform. Bandits, quotes and unquote, issuing conditions for peace to the Nigerian state,” Farotimi said.
The analyst used this account to underscore the serious challenges Nigeria faces in confronting heavily armed groups, emphasizing the need for vigilance, strategic planning, and strengthened security measures.
