Former Minister of Information Jerry Gana has raised concerns about the recent surge in school kidnappings in northern Nigeria, suggesting that some armed groups may be abducting children as a form of protection. His comments were reported by Punch Newspapers on November 23, 2025.
Gana made the remarks during an event in Abuja celebrating the appointment of Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi, as chairman of the World Customs Organisation. The gathering also served as a fundraising dinner for the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations’ national secretariat.
According to the former minister, the timing and pattern of the kidnappings suggest that armed groups are responding to fears of being targeted from the air. He noted that these groups appear to be moving into more remote forest areas, possibly to avoid surveillance and potential strikes.
“They fear that they are going to be targeted from the air and therefore felt the need to grab a few people to be human shields,” Gana explained. He described the tactic as alarming, highlighting the increased risks it poses to schoolchildren and the complications it creates for ongoing security operations.
Gana also pointed to statements by U.S. President Donald Trump as having potentially intensified the anxieties of these groups, contributing to the shift in their operational patterns.
