Another Big Blow to PDP: Rep. Marcus Onobun Dumps Party Amid Political Shakeups

According to a NewsVista reporter, fresh cracks have hit the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as Hon. Marcus Onobun, a member of the House of Representatives and former Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, has officially resigned from the party.

Onobun, who represents Esan Central/Esan West/Igueben federal constituency, announced his decision in a statement posted on Friday, July 18, 2025. He expressed deep gratitude to the PDP for providing him a platform to serve, adding that the choice to leave was difficult but necessary.

The lawmaker explained that his move followed “deep reflection and wide consultations” with political leaders and supporters across his constituency. According to him, this step aligns with a shared vision for “progress, inclusion, and effective representation.”

Though he didn’t reveal his next political destination, Onobun confirmed that talks and consultations are ongoing. His exit follows a wave of high-profile defections—including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who also recently left the PDP, citing irreconcilable differences.

As 2027 elections draw near, the PDP appears to be losing ground while major parties like the APC and newly formed coalitions continue to attract defectors.

Onobun reassured his constituents of his continued commitment to their growth and development, promising to unveil the next chapter of his political journey soon.
