According to a NewsVista reporter, the Federal High Court in Abuja has ruled in favour of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, ordering her immediate recall to the National Assembly after a six-month suspension the court described as “excessive.”
Delivering judgment on Friday, July 4, Justice Binta Nyako slammed the Senate’s action and declared the suspension of the Kogi Central senator unjustified. She also ruled that the Senate overreached its powers by relying on certain parts of its standing rules and the Legislative Houses (Powers and Privileges) Act.
Specifically, Chapter 8 of the Senate Standing Rules and Section 14 of the Legislative Houses Act were faulted as being misapplied in this case.
The ruling marks a major win for Akpoti-Uduaghan and a stern reminder that legislative power is not above judicial review. The Senate is yet to issue a formal response as the news continues to make waves online.
