According to our report, former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd.), has called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently counter the growing international narrative of a so-called “Christian genocide” in Nigeria — a claim he described as dangerous misinformation capable of damaging Nigeria’s relationship with the United States.
In a detailed statement shared on Facebook, Buratai argued that recent U.S. rhetoric and talk of possible military action against Nigeria were products of false narratives and weak diplomacy. He warned that if not properly addressed, these claims could push Nigeria into unnecessary conflict and harm strategic ties with Washington.
From our findings, Buratai urged the U.S. to avoid threats or coercion, warning that such an approach would only drive Nigeria toward global rivals like China and Russia. Instead, he called for genuine cooperation through intelligence sharing, counterterrorism partnerships, and data-based policymaking.
The retired general also faulted the Nigerian government for what he termed a “muted response” to the growing anti-Nigeria narratives abroad. He urged Tinubu’s administration to launch a strong diplomatic and media campaign in Washington, using credible lobbyists and interfaith delegations to present the true picture of Nigeria’s religious and security landscape.
Buratai concluded by calling for national unity, urging both Muslims and Christians to rally behind the government in defense of Nigeria’s sovereignty.
