Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) Oke Isegun in Eruku, Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State, held a deeply emotional Sunday service after a violent bandit attack left three people dead and 38 members abducted. The congregation gathered in smaller numbers, focusing their prayers on the safe return of their loved ones and strength for the community.
According to a Vanguard report, the church was unusually quiet, with about 30 worshippers in attendance. Pastor Bamidele Lawrence described the tragedy as a test of faith, assuring the congregation that he had received divine reassurance that the abducted members were still alive. He encouraged them to remain steadfast, likening their experience to biblical trials faced by the Israelites.
The pastor also offered words of comfort regarding the three victims who were killed, saying the members should take solace in their belief that those who died in the sanctuary are at rest with Christ. He urged worshippers not to fear death but to trust in God’s justice and protection.
Among those present was James Ige, whose wife and son were among the abducted. He pleaded for stronger government intervention, stressing the urgency of rescuing the victims. Church Secretary Michael Agbabiaka later clarified that 38 people were taken, correcting earlier reports that suggested over 60 were kidnapped.
Security forces—including soldiers, the Special Tactical Squad, SWAT, the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, and local vigilantes—were stationed throughout Eruku following President Bola Tinubu’s directive for a coordinated rescue effort. The bandits, who initially demanded ₦100 million per victim, reportedly reduced the ransom to ₦20 million before communication halted.
The service highlighted the community’s grief, resilience, and determination to remain united in faith as security challenges persist across parts of Kwara State.
