Cargo truck carrying firecrackers catches fire at Budumburam

A fire incident involving a cargo truck that occurred at Budumburam in the Central Region on Saturday evening has been controlled by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), with no injuries reported.

According to GNFS, a distress call was received around 8:16 pm regarding a cargo truck with registration number GS 2379-23 that had caught fire.

Despite the Budumburam Fire Station having an engine that was out of service at that moment, firefighters, under the leadership of Station Officer II Takyi, responded swiftly, utilising portable fire extinguishers to manage the fire.

Reinforcements from the Kasoa Fire Station subsequently joined the effort, and the fire was completely extinguished by approximately 10:29 pm.

Initial investigations revealed that the truck was carrying hazardous materials, including firecrackers, in breach of the Explosives (Importation) Instrument, E.I. 21 of 1999.

Fire officials believe that improper storage of the hazardous cargo may have caused spontaneous ignition. The truck was mostly salvaged, sustaining only minor smoke damage.

The incident has currently been reported to the police for further investigation.
