Christians Are Killed By Muslims, Not By Christians; Muslims Are Killed Not By Christians – Akinyemi

Professor Bolaji Akinyemi, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, has called on Nigerians to prioritize addressing widespread killings across the country instead of debating inflammatory statements by U.S. President Donald Trump. Speaking on Arise News, he warned that framing the security crisis as a religious competition could inflame sectarian tensions.

Akinyemi highlighted that Christians are predominantly attacked by Muslims, while Muslims face violence mainly from other Muslims. He stressed that national attention should focus on ending all killings rather than comparing which religious group suffers more, as such debates risk deepening societal divisions.

He also commended Pastor Oritsejafor for suggesting that President Tinubu engage directly with Trump, clarify his intentions, and request a 100-day period to demonstrate the administration’s ability to improve security. Akinyemi emphasized that years of unresolved violence, including incidents like the Chibok girls’ kidnapping, underline the urgent need for concrete action to protect citizens.

In his words: “Let us overlook Trump’s bombastic language. The main concern is whether Nigerians are dying, and the answer is yes. Christians are being killed by Muslims, not by fellow Christians; Muslims are being killed by fellow Muslims, not by Christians. The priority is stopping the killings. Pastor Oritsejafor suggested that our president should meet with Trump and request 100 days to show he can address the crisis, which is the most sensible approach I’ve heard.”
