The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has initiated a significant infrastructure enhancement project aimed at improving the quality and reliability of power supply in Adenta and its neighbouring communities within the Greater Accra Region.
This initiative includes upgrading the Adenta Primary Substation’s capacity from 40MVA to 80MVA to tackle the ongoing issues of erratic power supply resulting from the rising load demand in the region.
As part of this enhancement, ECG is installing two new 30/39MVA power transformers to replace the existing 20/26MVA transformers currently operational at the substation.
This installation is part of ECG’s larger objective to deliver quality, reliable, and stable electricity supply to its clientele.
During a media inspection tour of the project site in Adenta on Wednesday, February 25, the Acting General Manager of Accra Subtransmission, Ing. Emmanuel Addo, stated that once completed, the project is anticipated to greatly improve power supply stability in Adenta and the surrounding areas.
He emphasised that the upgrade will also fortify the power network infrastructure to accommodate the increasing electricity demand of the enclave.
“Three 20/26 transformers currently support the Adenta enclave, and the project intends to replace two of these 20/26 MVA transformers with new 30/39 MVA transformers. This upgrade aims to enhance the capacity of the transformers to accommodate the increasing demand”.
He mentioned that the project began on Sunday, February 22, 2026, and is being carried out in two phases. He revealed that approximately 45% of the work has been completed to date.
“The first phase will be completed on Friday, February 27, 2026. The timeline for the second phase will be determined after the successful commissioning of the first phase, which is currently under installation,” he stated.
Providing additional information, the Regional General Manager for Accra East, Ing. Bismark Otoo, stated that customers in and around Adenta have been facing frequent outages due to a substantial rise in load demand, which has exceeded the capacity of the current transformers.
He stressed that the upgrade is essential not only to address the existing supply issues but also to accommodate the future power requirements of customers in Adenta and surrounding areas.
Upon completion, the project is anticipated to provide a stable and enhanced power supply to customers in Adenta, Amrahia, Oyarifa, Danfa, parts of Madina, Teiman, and other neighbouring communities.
Ing. Otoo also disclosed that similar initiatives are in progress within the Accra East Region as part of ECG’s dedication to improving supply reliability and enhancing customer satisfaction.
He further warned the public against hiring private electricians during power outages, emphasising that such actions frequently result in transformer overloading and damage due to illegal connections, the use of inferior fuses, and unauthorised phase transfers.
Customers who are experiencing outages have been encouraged to reach out to ECG’s Contact Centre at 0302 611 611, visit the nearest district office, submit complaints via the ECG PowerApp, or connect with the company through its social media platforms @ECGghOfficial on Facebook, X, and Instagram for timely assistance.
ECG reaffirmed its commitment to providing improved service and requested the cooperation of customers as it endeavours to strengthen the power supply network throughout the region.
