Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, Special Counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, has opened up about the terrifying moment he and other peaceful protesters were tear-gassed while already under police custody in Abuja.
Speaking on Symfoni TV, Ejimakor described the event as “inhumane and shocking.”
“When it was 7:30 in the evening, they ordered us out and deployed tear gas against us,” he said. “The gas was fired at close range. I inhaled so much that I lost my voice — I’m still recovering from breathing problems.”
The lawyer revealed they were first held at the notorious SARS facility before being moved to Kuje Correctional Centre, where 13 people shared a tiny cell with just one toilet.
“Most of us couldn’t even lie down. It was extremely traumatic,” he recounted.
Ejimakor maintained that their protest was peaceful and lawful, aimed at urging the government to free IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, not to challenge the judiciary.
He clarified,
“The protest was against the executive arm that continues to prosecute him despite court victories. The judiciary has done its part — now, the buck stops at President Tinubu’s table.”
Ejimakor urged the government to end the suppression of peaceful dissent, insisting that Kanu’s continued detention remains a test of Nigeria’s democracy.
