In a dramatic escalation of the ongoing saga surrounding the untimely demise of Nigerian Afrobeat star Ilerioluwa Aloba, better known as Mohbad, his family has intensified demands for an unbiased and thorough investigation into his mysterious death.
The Aloba clan has also issued a stern ultimatum to his widow, Wunmi, prohibiting her from using the family name until a court-mandated DNA test verifies her son Liam’s biological ties to the late singer.
The family’s official statement, endorsed by patriarch Omolayo Aloba and Mohbad’s father, Joseph Aloba, underscores their unwavering commitment to uncovering the truth. It states:
“resolute in its demand for a transparent, independent, and comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s d+ath.”
To streamline legal proceedings, the family has designated Oladayo Ogungbe, Esq., as their exclusive attorney for estate administration and DNA-related issues. Meanwhile, seasoned lawyer Dr. Wahab Shittu, SAN, will handle interactions with probing authorities.
Three trusted administrators—Ajewole Aloba, Rasaq Famuyiwa, and Alonge Aloba—have been appointed to oversee Mohbad’s valuable assets, including music royalties and properties. Notably, a fourth position remains open for Wunmi, contingent on DNA results confirming Liam as Mohbad’s legitimate heir.
Adding fuel to the controversy, the family has explicitly directed Wunmi to “cease using the surname Aloba in public or private records until lawful confirmation of paternity is obtained.”
They further assert that “no statutory or customary marriage was contracted between the late Mohbad and Wunmi Adebanjo,” casting doubt on her marital status and rights.
Wunmi’s legal counsel, Kabir Akingbolu, fired back vehemently, labeling the surname ban as unlawful and emotionally driven. He argued:
“Nobody can stop her from bearing Aloba. That is the name given to her by her husband, and under the law, she has every right to keep it.”
Akingbolu also pointed fingers at the Aloba family for allegedly stalling the DNA process despite repeated judicial directives, declaring: “We are ready for the DNA any time, any day. The child is not a bastard, and my client has nothing to fear.
”The 27-year-old former Marlian Music artist passed away under suspicious circumstances on September 12, 2023, and remains unburied amid the turmoil. In response, the Lagos State Police Command formed a specialized 13-member panel to delve into the Mohbad death probe, amid widespread calls for justice in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
This latest development highlights deepening rifts over paternity disputes, estate battles, and demands for transparency in celebrity death investigations, keeping the Mohbad controversy at the forefront of public discourse.
