According to our latest report, Otunba Segun Showunmi, a prominent PDP chieftain, has cautioned the Federal Government to move urgently in order to prevent the possible enforcement of the Global Magnitsky Act against Nigeria. He warned that such an outcome could spell serious trouble for both the nation and key government officials.
In a statement shared via his official X handle on Saturday, November 1, 2025, Showunmi stressed that the government must “do everything humanly possible” to avoid triggering the global sanctions law. He described those downplaying the threat as “uninformed pretenders” who fail to grasp how damaging the consequences could be.
According to Showunmi, the combination of Nigeria’s recent designation as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) under the U.S. International Religious Freedom Act and the enforcement of the Global Magnitsky Act could lead to both national and personal sanctions. These may include diplomatic restrictions, financial penalties, visa bans, and asset freezes targeting officials linked to human rights abuses or corruption.
He urged the government to take accountability seriously and engage proactively with international partners to safeguard Nigeria’s reputation before it’s too late.
