The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has announced plans to prosecute popular TikTok content creator Habeeb Hamzat, popularly known as Peller, following a road accident reportedly linked to distracted driving.
The development comes after a viral video showed Peller live streaming while driving, an act the FRSC said may have contributed to the crash. Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed expressed concern over a growing trend of reckless road behaviour among celebrities, influencers, and content creators, warning that such actions endanger lives and undermine national road safety efforts.
“The incident serves as a grim reminder that fame does not confer immunity from the law, nor does it excuse dangerous behaviour on public roads,” Mohammed said in a statement signed by FRSC spokesperson Olusegun Ogungbemide on Monday.
He described live streaming or engaging in any activity that distracts a driver as a direct violation of traffic regulations, noting that such conduct jeopardises both the driver and other road users. According to the corps marshal, these actions also undermine ongoing initiatives to reduce traffic accidents and fatalities across Nigeria.
Mohammed directed the Lagos State Sector Commander of the FRSC to initiate prosecution against Peller for reckless driving, use of a phone while driving, and distracted driving in accordance with existing traffic laws.
He also urged professional bodies in the entertainment industry, including actors’ guilds, influencer networks, and content creator associations, to hold members accountable and encourage responsible behaviour on the roads.
“Celebrities and influencers wield significant influence, especially among young Nigerians, and they must serve as ambassadors of safety rather than symbols of recklessness,” Mohammed said.
Reiterating the FRSC’s zero-tolerance approach, he added, “No social media content, online trend or momentary clout is worth a human life,” while encouraging Nigerians to report dangerous driving to support safer highways.
