A young woman from the Democratic Republic of Congo, identified by the pseudonym Furaha, has opened up about a painful chapter from her childhood, explaining how long-standing family tensions and unresolved conflict pushed her into making decisions she deeply regrets today. Her story has sparked discussions about child protection, emotional wellbeing, and the importance of listening to young people when they raise concerns.
According to her account, Furaha’s parents separated when she was six, and she moved in with her mother and grandmother. Although her father remained involved in her life, her mother later remarried, taking her into a new household. Furaha says she struggled to adjust to her stepfather’s presence, describing the environment as uncomfortable and strained.
She claims she repeatedly reported unsettling behaviour from her stepfather to her mother, but her concerns were dismissed. Feeling unsupported and angry, she eventually made a decision as a young adolescent that she now recognises as emotionally driven and harmful to herself and her family relationships.
The fallout was immediate. Her mother reacted strongly and sent her away, and the marriage later collapsed under the weight of the revelations. Years have passed since the incident, and despite efforts from community elders and church leaders to encourage reconciliation, the relationship between mother and daughter remains fractured. Furaha says she now regrets her actions and continues to hope for healing within her family.
