A young woman from the Democratic Republic of Congo, identified as Furaha, has shared a deeply personal story about family tensions and decisions she now regrets. Her experience highlights the emotional complexities that can arise from broken families and the challenges of reconciliation.
Furaha explained that her parents separated when she was six, and she spent much of her early childhood with her grandmother. While her father remained involved, her mother later remarried, and Furaha moved into a new household with her mother and stepfather. She says she struggled with her stepfather’s behaviour, feeling unsafe at times, and that her concerns were often dismissed by her mother.
Feeling frustrated and angry, Furaha made decisions as a pre-teen that she now recognises were wrong, driven by a desire to express her feelings and sense of injustice. The fallout was immediate: her mother expelled her from the home, and the family went through significant upheaval, including a divorce.
Today, Furaha lives independently but regrets the choices she made as a child. She has sought reconciliation through pastors and other mediators but says her mother has not yet forgiven her. She hopes her story can encourage reflection on the importance of listening to young people and addressing family conflicts before they escalate.
