John Cardinal Onaiyekan, the 81-year-old Archbishop Emeritus of Abuja, has expressed deep concern over Nigeria’s worsening insecurity, warning that fear has become a daily reality for many citizens.
In an interview on Arise TV, Cardinal Onaiyekan said the wave of killings, kidnappings, and armed attacks has left Nigerians feeling unprotected. He noted that although he is now retired and no longer oversees any church administration, his age and experience compel him to speak honestly about the state of the nation.
The Cardinal criticised what he described as a lack of decisive government action against armed groups terrorising communities. He argued that elected leaders have both the mandate and the resources to secure the country, insisting that political interests, ethnic divisions, and religious sentiments must not interfere with the duty to protect lives.
Speaking on international reactions — including comments by former U.S. President Donald Trump describing attacks on Christians as genocide — Onaiyekan said external support can be useful, but Nigeria must first acknowledge the scale of the crisis. If the situation is beyond local capacity, he added, government agencies should be transparent enough to seek assistance.
He concluded by stressing the need for national unity and equal rights for every Nigerian, saying no citizen should feel marginalised in their own country.
