The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has reported marked improvements in fire safety in the first quarter of 2026, with fewer fire incidents, deaths and injuries, and a significant rise in the value of property saved.
In a statement issued on April 20, 2026, the Service credited the gains to stronger emergency response, better public adherence to safety regulations, and intensified fire safety education.
Between January and March, fire outbreaks dropped by 10.02 per cent, from 2,261 cases in 2025 to 2,055 in 2026.
Fire-related deaths fell by 53.5 per cent (from 15 to 7), while injuries declined by 62.79 per cent (from 43 to 16).
Bushfires also reduced sharply by 62.81 per cent, and prank emergency calls dropped by 17.8 per cent.
The value of salvaged property more than tripled to GH¢479.4 million, though total damage costs rose by 28.7 per cent due to a few major incidents, an indication of improved containment despite high-impact fires.
Greater Accra recorded the most cases, while domestic fires became the leading cause.
Out-on-Arrival cases also increased, suggesting quicker public response before firefighters arrive.
However, the GNFS raised concern over a sharp rise in road traffic accidents and rescue emergencies, calling for stronger national coordination.
It plans to expand public education, increase inspections and strengthen community fire prevention efforts to sustain progress.
