Gombe Govt Suspends Two Traditional Rulers Over Farmer-Herder Clashes

The Gombe State Government has suspended a District Head and a Village Head following reports that their inaction contributed to renewed farmer-herder violence in their communities, which claimed two lives.

The decision was taken at an expanded State Security Council meeting chaired by Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, and attended by security agency heads, commissioners, local council chairmen, and traditional leaders led by the Emir of Gombe, Alhaji (Dr) Abubakar Shehu Abubakar III.

Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Zubair Muhammad Umar, explained that traditional rulers serve as the first line of contact at the grassroots level and must act proactively to resolve disputes before they escalate. The suspension follows reports that the affected rulers failed to prevent violent clashes in Funakaye Local Government Area.

In addition, the state government announced a new ban on the transportation of scrap materials (Bola-Jari) between 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m., citing its use in moving stolen goods. The trade will now be centralised in a designated yard in Gombe metropolis, supervised by a committee comprising security officials, local council representatives, and the Commissioner for Trade, Industry, and Tourism.

The council also addressed rising drug abuse, linking it to violent crimes. The Gombe command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) shared alarming statistics on drug trafficking and consumption, prompting plans to establish operational offices across all 11 local government areas. Governor Yahaya reaffirmed the administration’s zero tolerance for attacks on security personnel and endorsed recommendations from the AIG Zubairu Muazu (Rtd.) Committee to resolve issues such as land encroachment and cattle route blockages — key drivers of farmer-herder conflicts.

Engr. Saleh Muhammad, representing the traditional council, pledged stronger collaboration with security agencies and called on traditional leaders to intensify grassroots peacebuilding to maintain Gombe’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s most peaceful states.
