‘Gumi this not right’ Ahmad reacts as Gumi claimed bandits are poor, live in huts, they have nothing

Bashir Ahmad, former aide to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, has publicly disagreed with comments made by Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi regarding bandits in northern Nigeria.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, November 22, 2025, Ahmad responded to a 2021 statement by Gumi in which the cleric described bandits as impoverished, living in huts, and relying on streams for water. Ahmad’s reaction was firm: “This is not right. This is just not right, Sheikh.”

Gumi made the original comment during visits to bandit enclaves in Zamfara State, aiming to highlight what he perceives as systemic neglect, including limited access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. He has repeatedly advocated for dialogue and amnesty, portraying some perpetrators as marginalized rather than inherently violent.

Ahmad’s critique underscores concerns that framing bandits as victims risks minimizing the severity of their crimes, which have claimed thousands of lives and displaced countless communities since 2011. His stance reflects calls for a balance between addressing the root causes of insecurity and holding perpetrators accountable.
