Gunfire Erupts as Police, Soldiers Clash in Benue — One Injured

Tension erupted in Naka, the headquarters of Gwer West Local Government Area in Benue State, following a confrontation between the Nigerian Police’s Operation Zenda Joint Task Force (JTF) and personnel of the Nigerian Army on Tuesday. Reports confirmed at least one person was injured, creating panic in a community home to many internally displaced persons.

According to witnesses, the clash began when soldiers allegedly intercepted a police patrol returning from anti-kidnapping and anti-banditry operations along major roads in the area. Arguments between the two security teams escalated into gunfire, prompting residents to flee. The official vehicle of the JTF Commander, CSP Lyam Akegh, was reportedly damaged.

A local traditional ruler, Chief Deligba Akaa, said he sheltered a three-year-old boy separated from his family amid the chaos. Residents continue to search for missing children who ran off during the incident.

A military source offered a different account, saying soldiers at a checkpoint had fired warning shots after suspect vehicles failed to stop. The stray gunfire reportedly injured a 12-year-old boy, who is now stable in hospital.

Authorities from both the Army and Police have yet to release a joint statement, while investigations by the Benue Police and the state government are ongoing.
