“He Declared War on His Own People” — Joe Igbokwe Criticizes Igbo Leadership and Separatist Tactics

Lagos-based political commentator Joe Igbokwe has called on Igbo leaders and activists to abandon confrontational strategies and adopt political prudence, warning that violent separatist efforts have set the South-East back and harmed ordinary citizens. His comments, made in a recent Facebook post, contrast past armed campaigns with non-violent political approaches that, he says, delivered lasting gains for other regions.

Igbokwe recalled historical episodes — including the Biafran war and later separatist attempts — to argue that armed struggle produced heavy losses for the Igbo people. He singled out past leaders whose campaigns, he says, led to human tragedy and economic ruin, and blamed recent militant activity for worsening insecurity and social disruption in the region.

Warning that some elements have “declared war on their own people,” Igbokwe accused certain separatist actors of causing civilian suffering, destroying property and livelihoods, and normalising criminality in communities across the South-East. He described himself as among those affected by the unrest and urged a clearer focus on protecting citizens and rebuilding trust.

Drawing a contrast with political strategies used by other groups, Igbokwe pointed to the Yoruba experience in the 1990s and later years, where patient political organising, legal contestation and strategic planning — rather than armed confrontation — led to tangible political gains. He urged Igbo politicians to consult elders, seek expert guidance, prioritise dialogue, and use democratic tools to pursue progress.
