How to enjoy this festive season without stress

The festive season is here again, and across Ghana, anticipation is building for a period marked by vibrant music, energetic dancing and abundant feasting.

Communities, families and friends are preparing to come together in celebration, honouring traditions that bring warmth and connection to the end of the year.

As the excitement grows, it becomes equally important to keep safety and well-being at the forefront.

From personal security to health and food safety, taking the right precautions can help ensure that the holidays are not only joyful but also safe and memorable for everyone.

Ahead of the yuletide, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohunu, has assured Ghanaians, members of the diaspora, and other visitors planning to spend the festive season in Ghana of a safe and secure environment throughout the celebrations.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) is urging the public to take necessary precautions as the country enters the dry harmattan season.

In a statement signed by the Acting Director-General, Dr. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, the Service noted that the harsh weather conditions can affect nearly every part of the body, making it crucial for individuals to remain vigilant and prioritise their health.

To stay healthy during this period, the GHS advised the public to moisturise their skin with oil-based products such as shea butter, stay well hydrated by drinking plenty of water, and consume water-rich foods, including fruits and soups.

Additionally, people are advised to wear face masks in dusty areas, and individuals with asthma or other respiratory conditions are to limit outdoor activities.

As part of our annual tradition, The Ghana Report once again shares essential safety guidelines to help ensure both security and food safety throughout the festive season.

  1. Never carry large amounts of cash. If you must, put it in your front pocket and try not to display it when paying for things at the market or the mall.
  2. Try to avoid driving alone during the daytime or at night.
  3. Do not give lifts to unknown persons, especially at night.
  4. Always let your relatives know your whereabouts.
  5. As you approach or leave your vehicle, always be aware of your immediate surroundings.
  6. Never leave gifts or anything of value visible inside your vehicle.
  7. Never put your purse in the trunk before entering a store. It is better to take the purse with you and carry it safely.
  8. Don’t approach your car alone if suspicious people are in the area.
  9. Keep all your car doors locked, and your windows closed while in or out of your car. Be sure to set your alarm or use an anti-theft device if you have one.
  10. If you must shop at night, park in a well-lit area – avoid parking in areas that do not have lights.
  11. Park as close as you can to your destination, and be sure to note where you parked.
  12. Do not leave your car unoccupied with the motor running or with children or pets inside.
  13. Beware of goods sold at prices cheaper than reasonable market rates.
  14. Always check expiry dates of food items on the market.
  15. Avoid late-night outings if you can.
  16. Be careful about what you share. Don’t reveal sensitive personal information, e.g., home address, financial information, phone number, or that you have travelled.
  17. Leave outside lights on at night (or set them with a timer to switch on at night) when you leave during the day. When not at home, leave on some lights inside to show someone is at home. Thieves usually don’t approach homes that appear occupied.
  18. When you detect a fault in your door locks, alarm systems or smoke detectors, repair them immediately.
  19. Check your security devices (CCTV) regularly to be sure they are working properly.
  20. Check your door locks and windows anytime you return from outside.
  21. Good blinds or curtains may prevent robbers from looking inside your home and being tempted by all the valuables they see.
  22. Avoid sharing or posting live pictures or videos, particularly on social media. The more you post, the easier it is to have your identity stolen.

We wish you a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year in advance!!!!!!!!!!!!
