I called my sisters for us to peep out. When we peeped,we heard noise and children were crying-Gyang

The rising wave of schoolchild abductions in northern Nigeria continues to alarm parents, school owners, and teachers, with 327 pupils reportedly kidnapped in Kebbi and Niger states in recent days.

According to The Punch, the trend of attacks has made it difficult to predict which school might be targeted next. On Monday, 26 schoolgirls were abducted from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, though two later escaped. In Niger State, 215 pupils and 12 teachers were initially reported missing from St Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools in Papiri, with later figures putting the total at 303 students still unaccounted for. Despite rescue efforts by security agencies and state authorities, many of the abducted pupils remain missing.

Rev. Sr. Felicia Gyang, principal of St Mary’s, recounted the terrifying night in a video obtained by Sunday PUNCH. Armed men arrived in large numbers on motorbikes and vehicles shortly after midnight, breaking through multiple gates. “We got up, and I called my other sisters for us to peep out. When we peeped and saw outside, we heard noise, and children were crying,” she said, describing the panic that gripped staff and students.

She explained that in the confusion, finding keys to some gates proved difficult, forcing her to exit through another gate. As the staff worked to secure pupils who were momentarily safe, they could hear additional vehicles arriving, and cries of distress echoed across the school compound.

The Chairman of the National Proprietors of Private Schools, Otubela Abayomi, described the abductions as a major setback for national development and said the group’s National Executive Committee would meet to address the issue.
