I Can’t Just Sit In My Office While Government Officials Are Being Attacked And Beaten Up- Wike

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has defended his recent involvement in a land dispute that escalated into a confrontation with naval officer Lieutenant A.M. Yerima. The land in question is reportedly owned by retired Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo, former Chief of Naval Staff. The incident has sparked public debate over the use of military personnel in private disputes.

Speaking at a press briefing ahead of the FCT Executive Council meeting on Thursday, Wike criticized Gambo for allegedly deploying military officers to obstruct lawful government actions. He described such conduct as an affront to civil authority and stressed that no one, regardless of status or rank, should disrupt official operations using armed personnel.

The minister contrasted the current situation with previous land disputes he mediated peacefully, including one between former President Olusegun Obasanjo and retired General T.Y. Danjuma. He suggested that Gambo’s approach was unnecessarily aggressive and undermined both the rule of law and proper governance.

Addressing questions about his presence at the disputed site, Wike stated that his intervention was necessary to protect government officials performing their duties. “How can I sit as a minister when government officials are being attacked and beaten up, officials at the level of directors? And I’ll just sit in my office doing what?” he asked, emphasizing that safeguarding officials is a priority.

Wike concluded by reaffirming that his actions were within his authority as FCT Minister and reiterated that no individual is above the law.
